Translating to “winter loving”, Chimaphila umbellata is a small, evergreen perennial in the Ericaceae family. Pipsissewa grows in dry woodlands throughout temperate regions in the Northern Hemisphere, especially throughout southern Canada and the northern United States. While pipsissewa roots have been used as a flavoring agent in candies and soft drinks, it is the astringent leaves that are employed for their beneficial properties. Pipsissewa herb can be decocted as tea, extracted, or prepared for topical application.

Pipsissewa leaves have very little scent until they are rubbed to release a pleasant but mildly “puckery” odor. It is a member of the Ericaceae botanical family.
